Case Studies

In 2010 Scoresby Secondary College entered two fantastic case studies, one describing how they have incorporated smart water meters into their school curriculum and another outlining how they have used it as a maintenance tool. South East Water proudly awarded Scoresby SC $1000 for each category to be spent on water saving initiatives as school.

What is a Smart Water Meter?

Smart water meters can give your school the power to check and monitor your own water use. Smart water meters are an on-line, real-time monitoring and reporting system that allows decisions which can reduce water use.

With a smart water meter your school can:

  • Identify leaks
  • Monitor the results of water-saving activities
  • Reduce waste
  • Educate students and teachers about water use
  • Use technology in the classroom in a real and relevant way

Smart water meters allows anyone with internet access to view usage data and to share it. The system can also send alerts to mobile phones or email addresses if it detects an unexpected increase in water usage.

South East Water have been working with schools with smart meters to reduce their water use. Our 2007 a pilot with 45 schools was run. During that time:

  • 31 million litres of water was saved collectively by the schools involved, an average reduction of 10 per cent
  • Many schools discovered and fixed underground leaks that left unchecked would have cost thousands of dollars and wasted millions of litres of water
  • One participating school, Bentleigh Secondary College, reduced their water use by an amazing 85 per cent through detecting and fixing leaks, as well as installing large rainwater tanks.

Smart water meters as a teaching tool

A smart water meter is a perfect tool to teach students practical science, mathematics, humanities and ICT skills. Sharing this detailed, real-time information makes it easier to detect and fix problems, as well as to raise awareness of water consumption and see the immediate impact of water-saving initiatives in your school.

In fact, schools involved in our pilot program who used their smart water meter in the classroom achieved a much greater average water saving of 29 per cent compared to those schools where it was only used as a water management tool.
