National Water Week is dedicated to raising awareness of water issues in Australia and is the perfect time to focus on water at your school. You could weave it into discussions, conduct a school water audit, participate in one of South East Water’s events (see below) or look at www.nationalwaterweek.org.au for more ideas. It runs in October each year, so keep your eye out for 2012 activities next year.

2011

Secondary photojournalism competition.

South East Water ran a photojournalism competition for Secondary School Students to celebrate National Water Week 2011. The competition involved students showcasing their photographic talents around the theme ‘How You Value Water’.  The winner is:

Callen Rawlings, Year 7, St Michael’s Grammar, for his picture ‘Pit Stop’.

Callen Rawlings, Year 7, St Michael’s Grammar, ‘Pit Stop’.

"Often we forget about others and we just focus on ourselves. This photo shows how the dragonfly’s need for water is just as important as our need for water. Even a drop of water can be valuable to a dragonfly. I have called this photo ‘Pit-stop’ because the dragonfly is like a racing car. It has been flying around for hours and it is desperate for a drop of water. Just like a racing car pulling in for a pit-stop for fuel and a change of tyres, this dragonfly has swooped in for a drink.  It’s hard to imagine that so little water could make a difference, but it does. Just ask the dragonfly!" -Callen Rawlings
